What we're looking for is a reasonably priced cleaner that makes a clear difference to the way a dirty engine runs. We had plenty of vehicles around here that needed some injector cleaner, so we were able to test several. This bottle of cleaner only treats 12 gallons, so you'll need two or three depending on the size of your tank. You also have to use it every 1,000 or so miles to keep up the same benefits.

The only real downside with this cleaner is the measuring system. Since you're buying it a gallon at a time, you can't just open and tip it into your tank. You have to actually know how big your tank is and measure carefully.

Again, the only real downside here is the price. However, many users have noticed that the bottle seems to leak. While this doesn't affect performance, your safest bet is to open and use this immediately.

The main downside here is how useful this is. That probably seems like a strange thing to say, so let us explain. Because it works so well for what it's supposed to do, people have a tendency to think it's a miracle product that will revive an engine that has been neglected and overused. They ignore necessary maintenance and throw this stuff in there instead. That's not exactly a workable long-term strategy.

We really couldn't find anything wrong with this. It does what it claims to do, and it uses all petroleum so it can't hurt anything in your car by going in.

The only downside here is that you have to carefully measure it out. If you use too much, you'll get a film on the inside of your gas tank that you don't really want.

You'll find STP on the shelves of nearly every gas station in the country, and in most big box stores and even grocery stores these days. It's a popular product because it works. It unclogs fuel injectors and cleans off cylinder heads, oxygen sensors, and catalytic converters.

Although it does everything it says, you won't notice a huge uptick in power. Then again, Star Tron never claims it will give you more power, so there's no false advertising going on here.

The Verdict

Which is the best fuel injector cleaner? They all work; let's just get that out in the open. All of them are going to make your engine run more smoothly as the injectors get all the carbon and gum cleaned off. There are some that are especially good so here are our favorites:

Best Budget Choice


There's no way you'll get a better deal than Star Tron. If you want to keep your engine smooth and running neatly with cleaner you can trust, but you don't want to pay a ton for it, Star Tron should be your choice.

Best for Doing Everything


If you've got a diesel truck, a fuel-injected sedan, a lawn mower, and a summer-use-only boat hanging around that all need cleaning and preserving, then Sea Foam is your friend. It does an amazing job at cleaning and is versatile enough to be used in almost any engine you can imagine.

Best Overall


Our favorite of all was the Royal Purple. The comprehensive cleaning just could not be beat, and we saw the biggest difference after using this particular cleaner. The old Chevy moved faster, ran smoother, and looked so much cleaner that we were stunned.


If you're in a pinch, any of these will do the job; but we award the Royal Purple the title of best fuel injector cleaner of all.
