How To Connect A Subwoofer To A Car Stereo Without An Amp

Nowadays, we spent many hours each day in our cars while traveling around and the only form of entertainment during such times is music from the car’s audio system, and that is why you shouldn’t mind spending some money getting the right audio equipment for your car. If you are music enthusiasts, then you will install a subwoofer in a double din head unit car stereo.

When you install a subwoofer, it provides balance and power to your car stereo system. The speakers in the rear deck and door panels can only provide so much regarding bass, and that is why a subwoofer is important to make sure that, those lowest tunes in the music come out. I would recommend that you use a powered subwoofer to enable you to eliminate the need to add an aftermarket amplifier to power the large speaker of the subwoofer.

Types Of Subwoofers

There are several types of subwoofers on the market, and it might just be tough to select the best one for yourself. Remember a subwoofer is a square box which will provide your car with all the low-end bass notes in an audio system.

The type of subwoofer you buy will entirely depend on the power of the bass you want for your car, your car type, your budget, and the size you feel comfortable. What you will get on the market include:

Dual Electronics BP1204 12 inch illumiNITE High Performance Studio...
  • INCREASED OUTPUT CAPABILITY – specialized tuned port with computer aided design and...
  • DIGITALLY OPTIMIZED SUBWOOFERS – are carefully crafted for efficient and accurate bass,...
  • CURVED PLEXIGLASS VIEWING WINDOW – illumiNITE design with Brushed Aluminum subwoofer...

1. Powered Subwoofers

These are subwoofers that have built-in amplifiers, allowing you to save on space and no need to buy an amplifier. The drawback of such subwoofers is that their power is not as strong as those with external amplifiers. The good thing is that they are capable of producing good sound for midrange frequencies.

2. Subwoofer For Drivers

In the subwoofer category, it is the most basic one, and that is why they are sometimes referred to as the passive subwoofers. It is a basic subwoofer in a basic enclosure, and immediately you place it in an enclosure, it produces the bass. They need to be powered by an external amplifier to work properly. You can get them in various abilities and sizes.

3. Vehicle Specific Subwoofers

For your car, I will advise these type of subwoofers especially if you have a compact car. They cater for a particular kind of car, and thus each design is meant for a specific car. And since they are small, you don’t expect the bass to be powerful.

Picking The Right Subwoofer For Your Car Stereo

To enjoy the benefits of a subwoofer, I would recommend that you get the best which will greatly improve your audio system’s performance. It is worth noting that, the real audio power for your car stereo comes from the low end, the bass.

When you feel the music touching your heart when played, it is the bass doing the magic. The following features should be considered when purchasing a car subwoofer:

  • Check out the enclosures because different type gives a different performance with square enclosures being considered to be the best as compared to the round counterparts.
  • They are available in the single and dual voice coil with dual voice coils giving you more flexibility regarding wiring to the sound system.
  • It should have a high sensitivity rating thus, requiring less power to give out better sound output.

Connecting The Subwoofer Without Using An Amp

There are several ways which you can use to connect a subwoofer minus an amp. Remember, subwoofer comes with two codes, one for audio output and one for power. But the thing is, some subwoofers are more complex, depending on the model that you have chosen. You can use the following:

1. Connecting Using The LFE Subwoofer Output

On the box of the subwoofer, there is a place labeled “SUBWOOFER” or “SUB OUT” which you can connect to the car stereo using an LFE (low-frequency effects), which is found on most of them. The LFE port is a special one for subwoofers only.

All you need to do is to connect the LFE jack on the receiver to the Line In or LFE In jack available On the box of the subwoofer. You will be able to locate it as it is normally only one RCA connector on both ends.

2. Connect Using Speaker Level Or Stereo RCA Output

If your car stereo doesn’t have the LFE subwoofer output or the subwoofer is missing the LFE input, then check out if it has the R and L (right and left) stereo connectors. Alternatively, it could be having clips made of springs which will be at the other end of most available speakers. If the Line In is using Cables for RCA and the subwoofer is also using the same, you will only need to plug in L or R On the box of the subwoofer.

If your cable has an end that is split and has both the R and L, then you will need to plug both of them in. If the car stereo has both the R and L RCA plugs for the subwoofer output, you should also make sure that both of them are plugged in. If your subwoofer uses spring clips to connect the speaker wire, you will need to use the output of the car stereo to hook it up. When doing all this, make sure that you mind the channels.

If there are two sets of spring clips On the box of the subwoofer, for In and Out, you will need to connect one of the speakers to the subwoofer, which in turn connects to the car stereo to pass the audio signals. But if there is only one set of spring clips On the box of the subwoofer, you will then have to share the same receiver connection as the speaker.

Get the best subwoofer for your car stereo that will be easy to connect minus an amp. If you read the article carefully, you will be able to connect a subwoofer to a car stereo without an amp, stress-free, and in the shortest time possible.

This has to be the most poorly written, misleading and just downright moronic article I’ve read in quite some time. It’s very obvious that the author is clueless about journalism and car audio equipment. I would be ashamed to have published such hot dumpster juice.
