Steering systems repair

Rudder
  1. Steering repair
Diagnosis and repair of steering – a very responsible thing, since the safety and maneuverability of the car directly depend on this system. Therefore, these operations should be distinguished from others.
  2. Replacing the steering rack oil seal
When servicing steering mechanisms, replacement of the steering rack oil seal is one of the infrequent operations. Lubricant leakage is a signal of a larger problem, but luckily it can be avoided by timely replacement of the leaky seal.

Almost always it is connected with disassembly of the whole mechanism, so it makes sense to be ready for its associated overhaul: replacement of bushings, bearings, sealing sleeves (in steering with hydraulic actuator), and dust covers.

Some owners prefer to refill the oil instead of replacing the oil seal. With small amounts of losses (about 0.2-0.3 liter per half year) it is somehow understandable, and nevertheless there is no way to know, when the leak starts to progress avalanche-like and the steering mechanism will be left without lubrication. So if you are serious about your safety, the leak should be fixed immediately. With noticeable leak replacement of steering rack oil seals is inevitable. But there is one caveat: they are not removable on some models – officially only whole steering rack can be replaced.

  1. Change of steering rack dust cover
One of the reasons for steering control failure is depressurization of the mechanism, timely control and replacement of steering rack dust cover is needed to prevent it. This detail is in general a minor detail, and it does not take much time to replace the dust cap. But if the “hole” in rubber or plastic “corrugation” is not noticed in time, the repair can cost up to three zeros.
